When the subject of psychic development is raised, there is a line drawn in the sand. On one side are those who have had psychic experiences and believe in them. On the other are the skeptics, who categorically deny that they can happen.

It is such a controversial subject that many people who have had psychic experiences do not admit it publicly. They have seen what has happened to other people who have come out of the closet about their experiences. In many cases, they have lost their jobs or at best been subject to ridicule. It is understandable that they would not talk openly about their experiences. It is much safer to appear "normal."

This has been true since medieval times, when so-called witches were burned at the stake. The public at large and people in positions of power seem to fear the unknown. However, the times do seem to be changing and many more people are becoming open minded on the subject. We are learning that psychic phenomena do occur and that it is not crazy or abnormal to have experienced them or be able to learn how to access the psychic side of ourselves.

At least one researcher has used a modern brainwave monitoring device known as an electroencephalograph (EEG) to study psychic phenomena in order to learn more about how it works and how it can be developed. In one experiment, he hooked up a psychic healer to an EEG in one room and her client in another.

Our brains emit electromagnetic signals known as brainwaves. In normal waking consciousness, we operate at the relatively fast beta frequency. When we are calm and meditative, we enter the alpha state. When we are dreaming, we are in theta. In the very slow delta frequency, we are generally in deep sleep. To their surprise, researchers discovered that some individuals are able to remain awake while in the delta range.

The researcher in this experiment became very intrigued when the healer entered a delta brainwave state but did not fall asleep. It is generally believed that one automatically becomes unconscious when they enter delta, but she was not. He was even more intrigued when, moments later, her client in the other room also entered the delta state. Psychic healers and other psychics often say they "tune in" to their subjects. It seems that this may be the literal truth.

Studies like this help make sense of the often wildly disparate results that come from laboratory experiments with psychic phenomena. Skeptical researchers usually get results that support their skepticism, while researchers who do believe that psychic abilities are possible get more positive results. It looks like its not that either the skeptics or the believers are cheating in any way. It is more plausible that they are affecting the outcome of their research with their own thoughts.

Science has only recently openly begun to explore psychic phenomena objectively. Now that they have some hard data to work with, they may be able to find more answers. Meanwhile, many individuals who teach psychic development courses have begun to use the language of science in their teaching. One of the keys to successful psychic healing and other psychic powers is a deeply relaxed state of mind. This is attained in the theta and delta states. With practice, anybody can become psychic if they are taught to enter these states.
